Wisconsin Insurance Ethics CE: What You Need to Know

Since agent CE was first mandated back in the 1990s, the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) has required all licensed insurance agents to complete a minimum of 3 credit hours of ethics-approved material as part of their continuing education requirement. Ethics credits are simply a part of your 24 total hours — they are not additional credits on top of the 24.

The total is 24 hours, not 24 plus 3 ethics equals 27 credits. Three hours is the minimum, so you could take up to 24 total hours in ethics every two years. All credits count toward your 24-hour total requirement.

What Counts as Ethics CE in Wisconsin?

Ethics CE courses in Wisconsin cover topics like agent conduct and fiduciary duties, fair dealing and consumer protection, fraud prevention and reporting obligations, privacy and data handling responsibilities, and conflicts of interest. Each ethics course must be individually approved by OCI and assigned a course number — you can verify any course's approval status on the NAIC SOLAR lookup.

Common Ethics CE Questions

Do I need 24 credits plus 3 ethics, for a total of 27?

No. The ethics requirement is part of your 24-credit total. You need 24 total, and at least 3 of those 24 must be ethics-approved.

Can I take more than 3 ethics credits?

Absolutely. Three is just the minimum. You could take all 24 credits in ethics courses if you wanted to — they all count toward your total.

Does the ethics requirement apply to all license types?

Yes. Whether you hold a life, health, property, casualty, or any combination license, the 3-credit ethics minimum applies to every Wisconsin insurance agent.

Can I use CEWisconsin's One-n-Done courses to satisfy ethics?

Yes! Several of our 24-credit One-n-Done courses include ethics credits built right in, so you complete everything — all 24 credits including ethics — in one course.
